The first music video was Travelin’ Man by Ricky Nelson in 1961 and was directed and edited by his father Ozzie Nelson. He was also the first teen idol to utilize television to promote hit records.

Ricky Nelson

The song - "video killed the radio star"

The song "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles was the first music video shown on MTV in North America. The concept of the song is about once videos came into effect the radio star was put out of business showing the advances in technology and how it can effect people.

How Pop music videos have evolved over the last 10 years

1990's

In 1991, the dance segment of Michael Jackson's "Black or White" was cut because it showed Michael Jackson "inappropriately" touching himself in it. Michael Jackson's most controversial video, "They Don't Care About Us" was banned from MTV, VH1, and BBC because of the alleged anti-Semitic message in the song and the visuals in the background of the "Prison Version" of the video.[citation needed]

Also in 1991, emerging country music superstar Garth Brooks found himself at the center of controversy when his video for "The Thunder Rolls" was banned by both The Nashville Network (TNN) and Country Music Television (CMT). The video dealt with the issue of domestic violence in stark visual terms, and featured a heavily-costumed Brooks portraying an abusive husband. Although both Brooks and director Bud Schaetzle publicly denied that the video was crafted specifically to foster debate, its banning shed light on Nashville's conservative programming practices and brought attention to Brooks' developing sense of showmanship. In the wake of the video's critical acclamation, and with public support generated by nationwide "viewing parties" organized by supportive radio stations, TNN and CMT reluctantly began airing it. "The Thunder Rolls" went on to win the Video of the Year Award from the Country Music Association, and was named by both MTV and CMT as one of the "100 Greatest Music Videos Ever Made."
Madonna is the artist most associated with music video censorship. The controversy surrounding her marketing of sexuality began with the video for "Lucky Star", and amplified over time due to clips such as "Like a Virgin". Outcry occurred over the subject matter discussed in "Papa Don't Preach". "Like a Prayer" courted heavy criticism due to its religious, sexual, and racially-oriented imagery.

In 1990, Madonna's music video for the song "Justify My Love" was banned by MTV due to its depiction of sadomasochism, homosexuality, cross-dressing, and group sex which generated a media firestorm. The debate over the banning of "Justify My Love" by the Canadian music video network MuchMusic led to the launching in 1991 of Too Much 4 Much, a series of occasional, late-night specials (still being aired in the early 2000s) in which videos officially banned by MuchMusic were broadcast, followed by panel discussion regarding why they were removed.

In 1992, The Shamen's video for the song Ebeneezer Goode was banned by the BBC due to its perceived subliminal endorsement of recreational drug Ecstasy.
Prodigy's 1997 video for "Smack My Bitch Up" was banned in some countries due to depictions of drug use and nudity. The Prodigy's video for "Firestarter" was banned by the BBC because of its references to arson.

2000's
Björk's 2001 song, "Pagan Poetry", was banned from MTV for depictions of sexual intercourse, fellatio, and body piercings. Her next single, "Cocoon", was also banned by MTV as it featured a nude Björk.

Madonna's video for "Erotica" was aired only three times (each time after midnight) due to its sexual depictions of sadomasochism. More recently, Madonna's "What It Feels Like for a Girl" was banned in 2001 due to its graphic depiction of violence. She also pulled her "American Life" video because of its controversial military imagery that seemed inappropriate once the War in Iraq began; subsequently, a new video was made for the song.

In 2002, the video for "All The Things She Said" by Russian duo t.A.T.u. caused controversy as it featured the young girls, Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova, embracing and eventually kissing. UK TV presenters Richard and Judy campaigned to have the video banned claiming it pandered to pedophiles with the use of school uniforms and young girls kissing, although the campaign failed. Capitalizing on the controversy, the kiss was choreographed into their live performances. Top of the Pops aired the girls' performance with the kiss replaced by audience footage. NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno cut away from the girls' kiss to shots of the band. Throughout their promotional tour, t.A.T.u. protested by appearing in shirts reading "censored".

As of 2005, the Egyptian state censorship committee has banned at least 20 music videos which featured sexual connotations due to Muslim moral viewpoints. In 2004, many family groups and politicians lobbied for the banning of the Eric Prydz video "Call on Me" for containing women dancing in an sexually suggestive way, however, the video was not banned. At some point in the past, the video for "(s)AINT" by Marilyn Manson was banned by that artist's label due to its violence and sexual content. In 2008, Justice's video for their song Stress was boycotted by several major music television channels due to allegations of racism and violence; the video depicts several youths committing various crimes throughout the streets of Paris, with the youths mainly being of North African descent.

Genre's orginated from Pop music

Pop music otherwise known as popular music is an adaption and mixture of a multitude of different genres with sentimental ballads, vocal harmonies from gospel and soul music, instrumentation from jazz and rock music, orchestration from classical music, tempo from dance music, backing from electronic music and more recently rap verses

The first Pop songs

The very first pop song was called "Green Sleeves" and is often credited to Henry VIII as it is possibly the first widely-heard song in the English language

The Creation Of Pop

The genre pop music was created during the mid-1950s and was at the time considered a softer alternative to rock 'n' roll which now is referred to as rock music.
It has a focus on commercial mainstream recording, often orientated towards a youth market, usually through the medium of relatively short and simple love songs. While these basic elements of the genre have remained fairly constant, pop music has absorbed influences from most other forms of popular music, particularly borrowing from the development of rock music, and utilizing key technological innovations to produce new variations on existing themes.

Pop Music & What It Is

Pop music is a music genre abbreviated from the word popular, which is aimed at a commercial mainstream audience often orientated aroung a youth market. Pop music is an adaption and mixture of a multitude of different genres with sentimental ballads, vocal harmonies from gospel and soul music, instrumentation from jazz and rock music, orchestration from classical music, tempo from dance music, backing from electronic music and more recently rap verses from hip-hop.

Variation of Music Videos

The style of music videos are catergories into differnt types of section these include the following:

- Performance based which consits of the artist's/artist performing the song, often in a enviroment where the perfomance is emphasised such as on stage, in a studio.

- Narrative based includes a story, related to the lyrics of the song

- Concept based consists of a mixture of both a narrative and a performance of the song; often displays cameos of other artists or other props as a form of convergence (e.g. iPods, clips from films, cars etc.) ??? is that correct???

Every genre consits of a set of codes and convetions that regulate according to the genre which are regarded as the following:

Rap & Hip-Hop videos - largely consist of attractive women, fast cars, jewellery and expensive clothing which all convey messages of large spending habbits and living life in the fast lane. These videos are commonly concept based following the stucture of a mix of performance and narrative based features throughout the verses and a performance during the chorus.

Pop videos - largely strictly performance based with all band members wearing similar clothing and performing synchronised dance routines together. Groups that are one sex orientated such as JLS and N*Sync abide by these conventions and often have some form of interlude at the beggining of the video of screaming female fans whilst entering a concert in a red carpet event style conveying popularity.

R&B videos - usually concept based; largely narrative with little performance during the chorus. mise-en-scene largely glamourous, elegant clothing in addition to little apearances of jewellery which conveys messages of middle class living as the songs often touch subjects of love; crossing over to convetions of Pop music videos. Also contains common motifs of such as voyeurism, men dancing around women if its a song from a female prospective or a one on one relationship between a man and his partner from a male prosepctive

Indie videos - normally live on stage and are performance based.

Heavy Metal videos - allways performace based and includes the artist/s surrounded by mosh pits, dark clothing and screaming rockers.

What Are Codes And Conventions

Codes and conventions are social mechanisms which are used to allow audiences to instantly recongnise a text and associate them with particular groups or institution. Moreover codes and conventions give media texts a overall meaning and can often determine the response from its target audience.

Codes and Convetions can be identified and separated in to specifc groups:

Rap Music Video Conventions

The genre of our chosen track is rap and we will use codes such as props such as, jewellery and costumes to make the artist looking conventional of the rap genre of music video, also the use of the convention slow tempo rap instrumental further reinforces this rap genre.

I will use urban setting to show the characters background which links into his urban “street” lifestyle selling drugs and making illegal ways to make money.

I will use costumes to show his "thuggish life" style such as hoodies, bandannas to show his street lifestyle which links into street gang culture which are all conventional of rap genres. Also the black clothing suggest a dark side to the male character which reinforces his bad illeagal life style.

Furthermore the props such as jewellery will also show his wealth form doing illegal methods to make money and his superiority over the other people with less money and the artist is seen as an inspiration to younger urban resisdance.

Michael Jackson Thriller Video Analysis

Michael Jackson thriller uses a variety of generic codes and conventions to appeal to its target audience.

Thriller target audience by uses of zombies to tie into the thriller (horror genre) this appeal to people who enjoy both the music video which has the first video with a movie storyline but also for people who enjoy the horror element of the video

Thriller uses effective elements such as the use of mise-en-scene like the props used such as grave stones, battered costumes to give the spooky horror element as well as to add to realism making it scarier to the audience. To further add to the spooky horror feel there is use smoke/steam which is conventional of a horror film, furthermore there in use of relationship between sound and image were when Michael Jackson uses dialogue to say “you hear the door slam”, then non-digetic sound effect is used to scare the audience further enforcing the horror element throughout the video. Moreover to reinforce this horror element there is use of stereotypical American theme throughout with Michael Jackson costumes as he is wearing an American baseball jacket and the girl wearing a cheerleader out fit which adds to the authentic American style adding realism.Michael Jackson thriller uses a variety of generic codes and conventions to appeal to its target audience.

Another piece of effective use of horror is the intertextuality references from former horror movies such as “dawn of the dead and American werewolf to tie into the horror element. However there are also uses of conventional pop music video such as shot size and camera angles such as the tracking shot of the couple as well as the high angles of the dance routine to a satisfaction to the audience. Another conventional shot is the low angle shot to show Michael Jackson superiority which is conventional of the pop music genre videos.

Main Black Male Artist

This is a shot of the main male character I chose this character because he is a black male which is conventional of UK rap, also I used a black male because to fit to the stereotypical precession of black males being criminals and having sexual relationships resulting in teen pregnancies and under age fathers.

Urban Council Estate

This location shot is of the a urban council estate which shows the main male character lifestyle and how it contrast his girlfriend lifestyle, also the urban setting is conventional of UK rap videos, furthermore the lyric relate to the setting, due to the drug content stated in the lyrics and the urban theme such as teen unwanted pregnancies and domestic problems.

Middle Class House Hold

This location shot, is the shot of a middle class house hold where the character playing the pregnant girl friend (black rose) lives to which contrast the boy friends life style and there different places the live and there up bringing. To show she was raised well but she has a dark side to her and isn’t perfect and makes mistakes which ties into the lyrics story content how a teenage girl becomes pregnant.

Feminist Critique Of Snoop Dogg Sensual Seduction

Snoop doggs video sexual seducation is a performaced based video, the narrative is about a male character whp os sexually active and has extreme sexually fettishishes and is talking about affair with women in his video

In the video women are represeted as sexual character due to there skimpy outfits also they can be seen as domianant in certain video seens due to the large capes and leather costumes on the women which can be seen as a dominatrix type outfit which enforces there women superority over the males. However this costumes can make the women appear as inferior compared to the males because the can be seen as prostitues due to the male characters in clothing and the women in less clothing.

Men are represented as superiory over women this is evident in a mid long shot of snoop and three other females in laungrie and the female underneath his legs laid on the floor wearing a police hat, this reinforces the male superiority of snoop dogg also the police hat enforces the fettish sexual lifestyle. There is also use of intertextuality due to snoop dogg appearing to look like huggy bear from starksy and hutch who he also played in the film starsky and hutch which ties into the male superiory due to male character seen as pimps over the women which show the male power over the women. Also the video also has intertextuality due to the video set as the same as Robert Palmers “addicted to love"video style .

Gender sterotypes are both confirmed due to a varity of elements, the male sterotype is confirmed due to mise en scene as that snoop dogg is a black male who is unfaithfull and sleeps with a varierty of women and appears to be sexually driven. Another sterotype that is confirmed is that snoop appears to satisfy women this is clear due to close up to show the video girls facial expression when talking about his sex life, furthermore another scene in the video were snoop in in a bed with a girl and they are floating in space which shows he can take women to a different planet sexually. Also images in the video such as the diamond spininning in the back round shows snoop wealth and also he can be seen as a “girls best friend” as he is being compared to a diamond which links into this sexual theme constanlty being streamed to the audience.Women sterotypes are also confirmed as they are seen as a piece of eye candy in the video and are seen as lower ranking compared to the male characters who are seen as dominant, another sterotype confirmed is that women are seen as they are only seen as sex objects only and are multi purposed and men just use them for sex.

The target audience for this video who is male and female audience over the age of 18 and over due to the sexual conination and sexual innudenos which people from the age group can relate to, also this age group targert audience is for people who can realte to the intertextuality from the films starsky and hutch and Robert Palmers “addicted to love"video style

Despite the text looking like it was set in the 80s style video it is still conventional genres this is evident by the varity of women to be seen as eye candy the it conventional of the hip hop genre. Also another convention of hip hop genre is the use mise en scene due to props such as jewlerry used by snoop dogg to show his lavish wealthy lifestyle which is also conventional of the hip hop genre. However there are some unconventional mise en scene such as the costume that snoop dogg wheres which isnt conventiontal of the hip hop genre videos; however the clothes he is wearing does cannote wealth due to it is silk and the large 80s style sunglass cannote snoops wealth.

I belive this text is successful as it still has the fundamental element that are need to make a hip hop video convention such as a varirty of women, clothing to connote wealth and props such as chain which all these things stated the video has.

50 Cent I get Money Video Analysis

50 cent video “I get money” uses a variety of generic codes and conventions to appeal to its target audience, such as the slow tempo American rap beat to relate with its audience. Also to relate to the rap “gangster” lifestyle due to uses of mise en scene such as the lavish, luxurious cars, gold and diamond chains and street “hoodish” clothing.

Furthermore, more generic codes and conventions of rap videos are the use of women models in the video which are stereotypical l of the gangster rap lifestyle, yet it also appeals to the audience as a sense of eyes candy, also uses of street dancers are also conventional of these rap style video. Also the women in the video are dressed in bikinis and less clothing compared to the male characters showing the difference in status and that the men are more superior then the women. Also there is constant bold text in the video similar to a concert style money flashing “I GET MONEY” constantly throughout the video showing 50 cents extravagance. Also the same use text font is used stating “I’M #1” displaying and suggesting that 50 cent is the best and number 1 rap artist and the number1 in the charts. Which is conventional of rap male videos which is all about being the best and the alpha male in the rap game.

50 cent I get money is a performance based video. It uses good techniques of both shot sizes and camera angles such as the low angle shot of 50 cent to show his superiority in the video and the rap game. Also uses of mid long shot show the vast numbers of his crew which relates to street target audience. To further enforce this “hood rich” life style mise en scene us used such as the huge stacks of money to show 50 cents wealth. Furthermore to add to the wealth aspect there is an abundance of green used in the video which is the colour of the American dollar which increase the theme of wealth and money frequently channelled throughout the video also the green is bold and stands out which ties into 50cents talent and attitude in the way he stands out from the rest of the rap artist and is better then them.

In addition another important shot is 50 cent blowing out a birthday cake of money which shows his wealth and that it is so easy for him and he has so much money to waste further more cake is a slang term for money which again appeals to the street audience. This wealth is enforced by the dialogue used in the lyrics of the song saying “im stanking rich” this showing he’s extreme wealth.

Inner City Life Written Analysis

Inner city life’s video narrative is based on the hardship and pressure of council estate lifestyle and deals with inner city dilemmas such as bills, single mothers, drugs, prostitution and gang culture.

The setting is in a council estate in on of the major city of England this is evident due to the large council estate flats the mise en scene used is utility bills so show the hardship of council estate life and the pressure a single mother has to deal with due to these bills shown. Another aspect is the use of young children hanging out at on street corners this also adds to the trouble sum and stereotypical life style of this inner city children lifestyle. Furthermore another stereotypical element dealt with is the robbery as there is a shot of a burning car which seems to be stolen and is being burnt to get rid of the evidence so this is another element of street life that this video portrays. Another important shot is the high angle shot of a trolley being thrown out of a window to show the blatant disregard for the council estate life style which shows that no one care for where the live and how it looks, which gives a reading of that no one care and there is no hope for the people of the council estate life style and the people living there have given up of life. Another effect shot is the use of a high angle shot of a BMW car in the council estate which offers a polysemic reading as in one way it could show a sense of hope in the council estate due to that this person has money and is worked hard to get his car, whereas on the other hand it could be a drug dealer which show that the only hope in the council estate is to sell drugs to get money so the only income of money is through illegal ways, in addition we are enforced with images of young children with hoods on which may show that these children are also going to grow up to be a drug dealer and are a product of there environment.

I believe that Marxist who argue these are realistic messages being portrayed in the video because Marxist believe that the economy bases peoples social class and because it is seen as people from low income background will be evidently feel low and depressed with life and feel.

Status quo is to keep the things the way they presently are, and I believe that this video maintains the status quo due to the stereotypical day to day life that goes on in council estate life. This is evident due to the high angle shot of a mother in a bed with her child then it juxtaposes a shot of the same mother in the same bed with a man which shows again shows that the only way to make money and support your family is through legal methods such as in this scene where there is theme of prostitution.

The target audiences for this video are people from urban estates from teenagers to young adult as they can relate to the video because of the concepts dealt with. Also people who enjoy the British urban music scene which is generally people from the same age group.
